Shaloh House Trip to New York
On Sunday February 17th, Rabbi Gurkow led a group from Shaloh House to visit Brooklyn and Queens NY.
Front of 770 Eastern Parkway (Chabad Headquarters)
The first visit was at the resting place of the Lubavitch Rebbe, we all laid a note with a request for his blessings, which was a most moving experience to all. Following, the group made its way to Crown Heights and Borough Park, visiting the headquarters of Chabad known as 770, as well as many shopping opportunities on famous Kingston Ave. After having launch at Mendy's, some bought books, a Mezuzah cover, gifts for family members and even a Black Hat! Being in Brooklyn does present diverse experiences; walking down 14th avenue we found ourselves in the middle of a Torah dedication parade ceremony, but not before an encounter with some arrogant insensitive New York City drivers. The day ended with a delicious dinner at Olympia Pita on Coney Island Avenue, and despite the fact that it took another 4 hours to drive back in a driving rain storm, the day made a profound impression, and was very inspiring to everyone involved.

First Yeshivah Class at Shaloh House
What better place to be on New Year's Day? In Yeshivah? Yes! Yeshivah came to Stoughton on New Years Day.
Pictured are part of the Yeshivah group (left to right): Bill Rowan, Steven Spector, Steven Rosen, Barry Cooperstein, Matt Power, Walter Rowen with instructor Rabbi Gurkow
What is Yeshivah? Yeshivah is a collage for Judaic higher learning, and on New Year's Day Shaloh House Chabad of the South Area initiated an adult Yeshivah with a curriculum of various subjects in Jewish law and Jewish mysticism. The lessons were geared towards beginners but with the unique atmosphere and style of Yeshivah study. The session ran from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, it included morning prayers and a typical Jewish breakfast of bagels and lox. Instructor, Rabbi Mendel Gurkow, led discussions on the topics of "Garments for the soul" relating to the inner dimensions of life, and "Untying the knots of the Talit." relating to the background and Talmudic discussions on the prayer shawl. The participants have never been in a Yeshivah atmosphere, but very much enjoyed their first experience of Yeshivah style learning.
Barry Cooperstein was in attendance, he had this to say: "It was a really great program. It was in top form...informative, interesting, stimulating and it kept our attention throughout." At the end of the program all participants committed to help organize the next Yeshivah program at a later date.
If you wish to be informed of the next Yeshivah program please leave your information at our office at 781 344-6334, or at shalohhouse@shalohhouse.com
Shaloh House offers other adult education classes, including a weekly Talmud class and a weekly Jewish basics class. They are all open to the community and are free of charge.
Mark the date: Sunday, September 5th, 10:30 - 12:00, for a creative Shofar Factory. Every child will be able to make their own Shofar from a ram's horn. Everyone is welcome; the program is free.
